As you have probably heard, the cost of adoption can be one of the biggest challenges for couples looking to grow their family. Kate detailed this a little bit on our donations page. Basically, we are responsible for the application costs, foster training, agency fees, legal fees (Not just for ourselves, but the birth mother, the birth father and baby as well), medical costs for the actual birth and other various expenses that may arise. The total estimated cost can be anywhere from $30-$35,000.
Of those funds, about $25,000 goes to our agency Adoption Bridges of Kentuckiana. This covers our home study, foster parent training, enrollment andout match fees. We are also responsible for an anticipated $5-10,000 in legal costs for ourselves and the birth parents to finalize the placement. In addition to this there are other possible costs, like medical care during delivery and renewal of our home study certification that will depend on our situation as we progress through the adoption process.
Kate is quite the saver, but we realize this will require more than just saving to cover the total cost of adoption. We are working on multiple fundraising efforts to help us raise the money we need to help bring Baby Ashton home. I wanted to take a moment to share some of the things that we are already doing to meet our fundraising goals.
In late April, the local downtown neighborhoods of Jeffersonville held a community yard sale. We jumped at the opportunity to clear out some unwanted items and hold an impromptu yard sale fundraiser. In those two rainy weekend mornings, we earned a little over $300 to put towards our $500 application fee. This is what really inspired us to jump into a more proactive fundraising mode. We will be holding a much larger adoption fundraiser yard sale later this summer. Friends and family have already pledged to donate some unwanted items to our next yard sale. After hearing about our plans to adopt, Salon B, a salon in downtown New Albany, graciously provided us with two massive gift baskets for us to raffle off. We decided to set the tickets in increments of 1 ticket for $10 or 2 tickets for $15. Each ticket will be entered into both baskets to double your chances of winning.
This fundraiser has been a huge success, raising more than 1000 dollars to go towards our $4500 agency fee. The raffle will run until June 9th. If you would like to purchase tickets there are numerous ways to do so.
